I am also an investor in a number of genetics related companies so I pay especial close attention to the developments in the field. I still remember where I was when I, aged 11, watched Tony Blair and Bill Clinton talk about decoding the human genome. I was with my father and we were visiting my maternal grandparents. “Son, this is going to be important,” said my dad, class of ‘75 in Biology at Harvard College.

Sometimes in life you know what you are meant to work on and it was very much that way with me in that moment. Indeed everything that has happened to me since then has seemed as if it was just gently directing me back to my life’s work. Not for nothing my favorite movie is Gattaca.

If you want to know how things are going, you have to study the deep states of the powerful countries in the world, and to that end the British deep state matters tremendously. Indeed by its sheer cleverness it may matter more than other deep state save the American and Chinese.

Slouching toward Khazaria? Is a lack of genetic diversity Ashkenazi Jews’ greatest strength?

I read with rapt attention the news about a German Jewish cemetery that had undergone excavation and genetic sequencing about a month ago.

The analysis, the first of its kind from a Jewish burial ground and the product of yearslong negotiations among scientists, historians and religious leaders, shows that Ashkenazim have become more genetically similar over the past seven centuries.

Here’s the Jewish Telegraphic Agency:

Human remains from a medieval Jewish cemetery in Erfurt have allowed what researchers say is the largest ancient Jewish DNA study to date. Conducted without disinterring any remains, in keeping with Jewish law, the study published Wednesday in the scientific journal Cell found that Erfurt’s medieval Jewish community was more genetically diverse than their modern-day cousins, and carried many of the same Jewish genetic diseases — such as Tay Sachs and cystic fibrosis — that affect Ashkenazi Jews today.

“There have been many previous DNA studies, but not of Jews,” said geneticist Shai Carmi, a professor at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, whose search for study material led him to an archaeological dig at the Jewish cemetery in Erfurt. He and his collaborators were able to analyze DNA of 33 individuals who died between 1270 and 1400, using teeth they found there.

And here’s the paper in Cell. I even listened to a podcast about it hosted from Razib Khan featuring some American Jews and an Israeli, which was weird but whatever. I like Razib and I think it’s all to the good that the Israelis have decided to learn about their real history. Ha! Ha! Ha! I had you going, didn’t I?

It’s not like the Israelis would ever fake history, is it? Wait! It’s a policy of the Israeli government to falsify Palestinian history?

Candidly I think there’s a lot here that requires careful exposition and attention to detail. Such work has to be done carefully and with some measure of political sensitivity — or they’ll kill you or smear you. What’s that Faulkner line? "The past is never dead. It's not even past."

If your society is grounded on a fake history and that fake history is one genetic sequencing away from being completely disproven, well, maybe it’s time to reexamine how you order yourself. The era is coming when you can sequence anyone cheaply and reliably.

On that point I suspect that the Khazarian hypothesis may well be more directionally true than anyone really wants to admit. Hungarian Jew-turned-Mi6 spy-turned-novelist Arthur Koestler promulgated the theory way back in the 1970s — his book, The Thirteenth Tribe, was even favorably reviewed by Fitzroy MacLean in the New York Review of Books! — and recent historical inquiries have seemingly confirmed Koestler’s analysis.

Goldstein, David (2008). Jacob's Legacy: A Genetic View of Jewish History. Yale University Press, pp.71ff. pp.73-74: 'I was initially quite dismissive of Koestler's identification of the Khazars as the “thirteenth tribe” and the origin of the Ashkenazi Jewry. Was this not just another self-aggrandizing Lost Tribe narrative bereft of evidence? I am no longer so sure. The Khazar connection seems no more far-fetched than the spectacular continuity of the Cohen line or the apparent presence of Jewish genetic signatures in a South African Bantu people. [&] I cannot claim the evidence proves a Khazari connection. But it does raise the possibility, and I confess that, although I cannot prove it yet the idea does now seem to me plausible, if not likely.

Such history has been the plaything for real drama from the likes of the irrepressible Michael Chabon. Here’s the Wikipedia summary of Gentlemen of the Road — a "swashbuckling adventure" set in the kaganate of Khazaria (now southwest Russia) around AD 950. The plot follows two Jewish bandits who become embroiled in a rebellion and a plot to restore a displaced Khazar prince to the throne.

Might the modern equivalent of that Khazarian prince be the one Biden just sent the Israeli weapons to? That sly devil! Doesn’t he know that its antisemitic to take weapons from one Jewish leader and give it to another?

Repeat after me: Ukraine is the new Israel and Mexico is the new Afghanistan.

There’s an amazing project that ProPublica is doing concerning returning Native American remains at major institutions. I bring it to your attention because I’ll likely have more thoughts on it in the near future.

Yes, we need repatriation of remains, and I think the logical next step is to provide reparations. DNA testing has more or less convinced me that it is possible to identify whose ancestors owned who. We could, at last, get to the bottom of the Thomas Jefferson-Sally Hemings question that has long plagued historical inquiry.

I’ve long opposed the reparations debate but I do wonder if, perhaps, I made a mistake. Maybe we should have an accounting where the fortunes enabled by slave labor are broken up and sold off to the descendants of the slaves. Maybe we could even start with the New York Times whose proprietors the Sulzbergers were deeply implicated in the slave trade. Don’t try to put the 1619 project on the rest of us guys. Some of us have ancestors that fought for the Union.

We’ve talked at length about Harry and Hewitt and how we need to see the royal DNA but perhaps we need to see all public figures DNA and perhaps that DNA, with some safeguards, ought to be released as one might release one’s taxes if one runs for taxes. “You want transparency? Here’s my DNA!” my beau ideal of a statesman might say. This might be the only way we find out who Congressman George Santos really is!

Yes, yes, we need to see the drag queen or drug photos and in this day and age we will see them whether we want to or not.

This is why I suspect that federal informant Hunter Biden will ultimately become a hero or perhaps president. We’ve all seen him doing drugs and naked so he has nothing to hide. Were Hunter smart he would embrace his Arkansas-based daughter with the stripper and not try to stop her from being a Biden. It’s a touching story though I can understand wanting to protect a child from all the attention that being a Biden entails. There’s also the suggestion that Hunter fathered Beau’s kids… Not sure it’s relevant here but sequencing could probably get to the bottom of that.

As we all know people from Arkansas with complicated relationships with their daddies simply have to be elected president. Just ask the man from Hope. Or President Barack Obama who is not at all related to Frank Marshall Davis despite all the considerable evidence suggesting he is.

What would own the pro-life conservatives more than a photo op with President Joe Biden and all his grandchildren? Even the press corps refuses to acknowledge the stripper baby as an acknowledged grandchild. Could it be that she kept a condom full of Hunter’s seed?

In any event let’s have a culture of life for everyone — from birth to death — and start with sequencing them in the womb.
