As fate had it I happened to be in Manhattan to witness Zohran Mamdani win the Democratic Primary election and to suffer through the unbearable heat. I was being interviewed by documentarian Alex Gibney about Elon Musk, much of which I’ll discuss later.
Millennials, have we arrived at last? Let’s hope that the AOC-backed Zohran Mamdani can deliver at least some of what he promises.
When I was younger I believed that people actually believe their ideologies but now I think it’s really a cover for their behavior or class interest. Whenever someone uses an “ist” phrase as an epithet they are really reflecting the taboos of the time. Mamdani understands this phrasing by making fun of it.
No, Zohran Mamdani isn’t a “socialist” even (and perhaps especially) if he says he is; he’s raising real concerns about the management of New York City, which has been suffering ever since the departure of Mayor Michael Bloomberg.
Might it be time for the richest in our greatest city to live a little less at everyone else’s expense — and a little more communally? Aren’t we all in it together, especially in New York?
Gibney mentioned that Sanders and AOC are winning the argument against billionaire predators. Billionaires really are a policy failure — and a source of elicit funding for the corrupt. And no, we won’t be able to have that conversation as Gibney’s masterly documentary on Netanyahu couldn’t get distribution on any of the major streaming services. What would it be like if we weren’t under oligarchy or Zionist occupation? Mamdani imagines a more helpful vision.
Eric Adams couldn’t deliver because he couldn’t call out the Zionist human trafficking from Matt Michelsen and Greg Abbott. When Adams started to address this behavior they indicted him for being a spy of Türkiye or some other nonsense. How ironic indeed that they now grovel to him to rescue them from the polite Muslim socialist.
Maybe we should see the slogan of “defund the police” as the beginning of a negotiating tactic with the power structures that in effect control the NYPD as their personal fiefdom?
Mamdani suggests that we are replacing the taboo of discussing socialism by ending the taboo around Zionism. He links implicitly the treatment of renters by their largely Jewish landlords and the treatment of the Palestinians which is so seditious mostly because it’s entirely true. So sorry my friends at the Israeli influence operations aren’t going to get us to hate someone just because they are Muslim. That’s un-American.
Oh and wasn’t it weird to have candidates for mayor who cared more about Israel than the Big Apple? Isn’t it weird to have the parents of a mayor being targeted by a foreign spy network?
Oh yes, there’s something thrilling about watching Zohran Mamdani call for the arrest of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. And I’d contend that the first Republican to follow Mamdani’s calls for justice against Netanyahu will be the next Republican president. Looking at you, Matt Gaetz!
To be sure there’s something thrilling about Mamdani’s sudden rise from obscurity to mayoralty. Who says nothing ever happens?
The cities belong to the communal and it’s pretty obvious isn’t it that we aren’t really going to have white Democrats anymore in the major cities.
What this portends for the national prospects of the Democratic Party is a little less clear. Can Democrats win another national election without a white male on the ticket? Mamdani wasn’t born in this country so he’s not going to become a national figure. Then again, few mayors ever do.
Isn’t it remarkable that we can go in less than a quarter century from an attack on our country ostensibly by Muslim-inspired terrorists to having a Muslim mayor?
Now I’m a fan of Eric Adams, who I have defended herein and it would be pretty great to see him win again against all the odds. Were I living in New York I’d be happy with either choice — Zamdani or Adams. And there’s a real sense
You can see the 2025 election as a contest between Homeland and the Internationalists.
Who is Zohran Mamdani actually?
Obama once said that Americans cling to their guns and their religion but really we cling to our iPhones and their endless apps. This is what Mamdani and his millennials understand — that to govern the polis you must first entertain it. Cuomo’s father said you campaign in poetry but govern in prose. Mamdani knows that to take the streets you must first control the tweets. In this way, Trump is his perfect foil.
Mamdani met his Syrian-born wife on Hinge. He campaigns on Tik Tok. He gushes about the Marvel movies.
He knows that millennials are satisfied and optimistic — “is there anything we can’t do?” our boomer parents believed — and yet happy in our fallen world. He is childless — or is it child free? — but he is happy and excitable.
You’re not supposed to ask the obvious questions about the DSA and its ties to the intelligence community and whether or not Mamdani is himself something of an asset. Does Democratic Socialists of America stand for Deep State Assets?
You’re not really supposed to talk about the DSA and its longstanding connections to the U.S. intelligence community.
Are we really not going to talk about all those who want to bring pressure to all the Zionists in New York City?
Here is Mamdani co-authoring a piece calling for the boycott of Israel in 2014.
Regardless of what happens with Mamdani, it’s been incredibly amusing watching all the “definitely not owned by Zionists” media and Xitter figures come out against him like he’s some sort of evil hybrid of Pol Pot and Osama Bin Laden when three months ago they couldn’t give a toss about the DNC primary in NYC.
