This one will be a tad controversial. Reader discretion is advised.
Whenever I read a report in the news that comes seemingly from left field I’m always left asking two very simple questions: Qui bono and why now?
That’s most in mind as I read Ken Vogel’s latest piece about Hunter Biden.
I’ve spent a lot of time researching and reading about the family Biden and there’s a rich history that goes way back if you are familiar with how best to use Ancestry.com.
You can read about Hunter Biden in Adam Entous’s great New Yorker profile.
I’ll discuss my own interactions with Vogel down below. It’s my contention that the New York Times story is designed to pressure Biden in much the same way that the smearing campaign around his son was used to pressure him. Will it work? It seems unlikely.
Defamation can be a tool of foreign actors, especially against those with ties to the US intelligence services as I know all too well. (This is, by the way, why I continue to sue media organizations like Huffington Post and BuzzFeed. Apparently I’m not alone these days! Welcome!)
Having grown up in Boston, the last thing I would ever do is go after an Irishman’s only remaining son but that’s me.
At issue is a question I’ve long wondered and which I think needs clearer articulation and examination.
Is Hunter Biden a confidential informant?
Consider the following:
Despite an early career working for a bank with large ties to British intelligence, Hunter has had a wild midlife.
Seemingly everyone he has done business with has gone to jail including Chinese potentates and shady businessmen. When Tony Bobulinksi mailed a package to Tucker Carlson that package wound up being opened before Carlson got it. Which entity has the power to do that sort of thing?
Hunter sells art to sketchy Israeli intelligence officer turned Chinese-backed property developers like Moishe Mana who may or may not have ties to foreign intelligence and who definitely has ties to Mayor Francis Suarez of Miami and the Clintons.
Hunter’s new wife, a South African-born Jewess, is rumored to be Mossad (though I suspect she’s closer to British intelligence than Israeli.) Hunter married Melissa Cohen just six days after they met. Six days!
Was Hunter assigned a wife to keep him out of trouble? Sure feels that way. I’ve tried and I can find very little online about Melissa Cohen Biden other than that she co-owns Tribal Worlds, a company that works to “promote indigenous conservation." There’s even a kickstarter for it. Melissa is described by the ever reputable Sun of the UK as an “activist.” Just who is she an activist for? That’s better left unsaid. She was spotted last in Rio de Janeiro showing off her physique and “attending the Orphaned Starfish Foundation's benefit for the LGBTQ+ community, orphans, indigenous children, and more". OK then.
Now her film production company seems like a front to me! But maybe I’ve watched too much Argo for my own good. Who knows! The ex-husband of Melissa — Jason Landver — works as a gem consultant. That’s not weird, no, not at all. Maybe I’ve seen too much in Uncut Gems.
Like his father and brother, Hunter sought to serve, admittedly in his weird way. At age 43, no less! He wanted to serve his country in the Navy but failed out due to a positive drug past. Now to be fair Hunter got a waiver to serve despite a previous drug charge, and was administrative discharged when he tested positive. This service, along with his late brother, Beau, who served in Iraq, is noble in its way.
Neither Mitt Romney’s five sons nor Donald Trump’s children ever expressed any interest in wearing the uniform. Nor, for that matter, have George W. Bush or Barack Obama’s daughters. (I’m all for equality, naturally.) Small wonder then that the only president we’ve had in my lifetime to send his sons into harm’s way has a realistic understanding of the limits of American power. The last American president to have had a son serve in wartime was none other than Dwight D. Eisenhower — his son John served as an officer in World War II and the Korean War — and we all know how he felt about the military industrial complex. Biden is the continuation of Einsenhower’s skepticism.
For all of his flaws Hunter still tried to do the right thing and join up. He is like George P. Bush in that way — the scion of a powerful family trying to do his part despite his flaws. Consider me a fan.
To be sure, the military isn’t a social welfare program but maybe we ought to find ways for even the drug-addled to be useful in much the same way that the Israelis put to work their autistics? My paternal grandfather was of the view that America needed something akin to a national service and he tussled with Ronald Reagan on this very point. Deprive a man of purpose and you’ll see him turn to alcohol or drugs or both. I think this explains much of the opioid crisis.
Now Hunter may not be exactly the sort of man of who is military material. He fathered a child out of wedlock and reportedly didn’t even remember sleeping with the stripper he knocked up. Yikes.
Sleeping with your dead brother’s wife isn’t exactly the sanest thing out there though I’m not here to judge. We all find our ways to grieve. In an age where so many of our sex scandals seem only to involve text messages, it’s rather quaint for it to involve actual sex with actual women. Call me a traditionalist when it comes to sex scandals. And yes, I would still want to party with Hunter. Or at my younger self would. Or at least my younger self would have loved to be cool enough to be invited to a Hunter Biden party. It’s hard to admire Don Jr.’s taste in women. Your father is president of the United States and you’re dating a woman ten years older than you? Who is Gavin Newsom’s ex squeeze? For shame.
And perhaps Hunter isn’t exactly responsible. Right wing websites tried to make a lot of Hunter’s gun being thrown away. Given his mental health issues might he have been trying to get rid of a weapon he could have used to kill himself after the death of his brother?
As the son of a career politician Hunter would have routinely been approached by foreigners seeking things they really ought not have. Did he turn the tables on them?
More to the point: was Hunter always our guy? Was he willing to do the blow and screw the hookers that no one else would to ingratiate himself with the world’s worst of the worse? Not all heroes wear capes. Some may smoke a crack pipe or two.
I haven’t read Hunter Biden’s book, Beautiful Things, which goes into some of these misadventures. I have mixed views on this subject. Am I participating in Hunter’s exploitation if I buy that book? Or am I excusing drug addiction? There’s a sense in which some of this stuff becomes a kind of pornography, akin to watching slow moving train wrecks. I’m not here for it.
To be honest I don’t buy his explanation that his drug addiction was induced from a car accident when he was a kid. It’s a nice idea but it’s not exactly consistent with the science of addiction which seems to run in families.
I could argue for most kids who suffer some sports injury in high school and that that’s a starting point for latter opioid addiction down the line. No, I don’t think you should be allowed to prescribe an opiate without also doing a genetic test.
I think Hunter, along with a few of the Bidens, is genetically predisposed to addiction. Like President Trump before him President Biden is a teetotaler and his father and namesake was apparently a drunk before turning his life around. Is this true? Who knows when it comes to Presidents and their autobiographies. Autobiography, especially by politicians, is the highest form of fiction.
Still, Joe Biden was a drug warrior and he has all the conviction of a man who knows all too well that drugs are bad.
I wish the Bidens would talk about this issue and destigmatize it. Hunter, have your people call mine!
Drug addiction is a real, genetic thing. And at the risk of this seeming like an advert - -we have released an app out to the public at Traitwell.com, which you can use here.
I’d happily sign Hunter up as a lobbyist or a spokesman for the cause of getting all Americans genetically sequenced. Who knows? Maybe he could use the work.
And for all we know he might one day end up president himself.
A little blow and some partying never stopped George W. Bush from winning the presidency, did it?
It’s past time to have a bit more compassion and a bit less recrimination if we really want to heal those afflicted with addiction. Good on Joe Biden for mentioning it in his State of the Union speech.
In the waning days of the Trump presidency a friend of mine got a copy of the Hunter Biden laptop from a source. Several friends of mine, in fact, did, and nearly all of them have connections to Israeli intelligence.
In it he found a seeming orgy of evidence, implicating Hunter Biden in sex with prostitutes, drugs, and other untoward nasty bits. I’ve never heard of prostitutes taking selfies while in the act so I think we might be safe in assuming sexpionage.
Could a foreign intelligence operation be behind documenting Hunter’s many misadventures? Could they have hacked his iCloud and preloaded a laptop and handed said laptop off to a vision impaired Mac technician? I wonder… A focus on his sister Ashley’s diary makes me think this might have been an op targeting the remaining Biden family.
The New York Post pats itself on the back now that Ken Vogel of the New York Times has revealed that Hunter is at the center of a criminal investigation. Note that that’s “at the center of a criminal investigation” and not, say, a target of it.
I don’t think that was ever in question.
Do you want to live in a country where the children of presidential candidates can be blackmailed? Or where they can become legitimate political targets? (My readers on the right will point to the double standards — Ivanka and Don Jr. and Eric Trump were targeted! — but the Trumps all worked for their father.)
There were so many questions about that laptop that I still find myself wondering about though these questions are not of the convention right-wing tripe that light up the blogosphere.
Why did Steve Bannon have access to the hard drive?
Why did so many people connected to Bibi Netanyahu have access to it?
Why did Rudy Giuliani have access to it? What’s “America’s Mayor” doing here?
How do I know the photos and material are real? After all, there’s a long history of slipping in fake material by spies. That goes double for the “ten percent for the Big Guy.”
Consider that there’s been a number of fake photos of Ghislaine Maxwell like this one and that Lady Victoria Hervey claims that famous photo of Virginia Giuffre and Prince Andrew is also fake. Who knows?
Why were the most salacious bits marked so that anyone could readily turn it into stories?
For a crack head, in other words, Hunter seemed to be inordinately organized, perhaps the most organized crack head of all time.
I’ve already said this but I do wonder how convenient that the laptop was dropped off at the shop of someone whose surname is Mac and whose vision is bad. Parallel construction much? Apparently I’m not the only person who thinks that’s plausible.
There’s a tell here as well.
I’ve had dealings with Vogel before and I think he’s part of the long running compromise of the New York Times by foreign actors.
Vogel covered up Bill Browder’s relationship to Robert Maxwell and Edmond Safra and he has more or less parroted the most extreme Russophobic positions. I get it, guys, but Fiddler on The Roof is fiction. The czar isn’t out to get you no matter how many times you say Mr. Putin is.
Vogel claimed without evidence that I was involved in some sort of right-wing smear job against Chuck Schumer when I merely forwarded a tip I received to Mike Cernovich and Steve Bannon. They did with it as they sought fit. He called me a “far right activist” when I have pretty moderate to liberal views.
Vogel didn't disclose until he really had to that Paul Singer paid for the Fusion GSP dossier. I told Vogel in the days after Trump’s election that Paul Singer had funded the Fusion GPS dossier but he waited months to break that in the Times. Why?
We’ve already explored the family ties of other reporters who could be said to have a bias. Vogel’s father was born in Kazakhstan “where his mother and father [Vogel’s grandparents] were stateless refugees.” Vogel’s wife is Danielle Rosengarten, an attorney and advisor to Joe Lieberman. Today Lieberman is a lobbyist for Chinese surveillance tech. OK.
Ben Schreckinger of Politico used to report often about the weird ties of Chabad and then he told me that he got hacked. Now he writes about approved subjects like, say, Hunter Biden.
Of course, foreign agencies placing spies in the New York Times is old hat and something that every competent intelligence agency does well.
Meandering and vapid.
Finally…. yes, let us discuss Ken Vogel the master of access journalism and preacher of whataboutism. He needs to be treated like Maggie Haberman.
I went to journalism school with Ken and traveled in the same circles during college. I am keenly aware of who he is and what he is not. Libertarians are insufferable wankers.
