I made fun of Representative Mike Gallagher for being an actor the other day and now I see that he’s retiring from Congress. Well, well, well. Bye Felicia!
A stray idea occurred to me when I was going for a walk the other day:
What would it cost to induce mass Republican retirements in Congress and cause Hakeem Jeffries to ascend to the speakership?
If you think about the $95B package on offing it’s likely trivially cheap. Let’s assume $1m a retirement.
By my count it would take only $6m-$7m or so to trigger a change in leadership.
Who do you suspect would be the first to jump ship? My sense is that would include members who have already committed to retiring.
Simply retire sooner for Ukraine.
Here are the announced resignations.
Cathy McMorris-Rodgers (R-Washington)
Ken Buck (R-Colorado)
Mike Gallagher (R-Wisconsin)
Kay Granger (R-Texas)
Patrick Henry (R-North Carolina)
Jeff Duncan (R-South Carolina)
Add two more and get them all retire and you’re good to go. Indeed it looks as if there are a bunch of Republicans who are already retiring, per The Hill.
I’ve come around to thinking that the money for Israel could arguably be about helping the Israelis transition to a two-state solution. I agree with Arthur Bloom — that aid to Israel should be used to force Israeli good behavior.
I’m feeling a lot more confident about Ukraine’s prospects for victory now that there are major changes within Ukraine’s military. The Turks are building a Bayraktar drone plant in Ukraine and the Germans and the Danes are stepping up munitions manufacturing. Let’s be serious here, for a moment. All of that money is coming from the United States.
But what are they going to do with those dollars? Why they are going to reinvest them in America. As well they should.
As for the Border, it’s pretty obvious that much of the problem there comes from the human smuggling operations. Simply enforce the law against criminal fraudsters like Matt Michelsen.
Oh, and do swab the migrants for DNA and take their photo for facial recognition!
